    Description

Up for sale is a terrific piece of ephemera sure to be of interest to any collector of New Orleans, Louisiana documents.  It is a building permit issued on October 9, 1919 to Peter Jung, then the owner of one of the most famous and exclusive hotels in the city!
The building permit (No. 12029) was issued for a residence to be constructed in a block bounded by Harrison, Louisville, Bragg, and Iberville Streets, and fronting on Iberville.  The Building Department, City Engineer's Office, charged Mr. Jung $ 2.00 for the permit to building the residence at a cost of $ 1,000.00.  Mr. J. L. Rhodes was listed as the builder.  The permit specified that
"All necessary rat proofing must be done."
The bottom section of the building permit contains the approval of the Board of Health, on the same date, granting permission to build, conditioned upon compliance with a resolution that had been adopted in 1912 "relative to sewer connection".  It is noted that even though the upper section is completely filled out, the signature of the "Clerk" is missing.  The significance of this is unclear.
I believe that the location of the planned residence that received this permit was in what is now called the Lakeview District of New Orleans.  Harrison Avenue, Louisville Street, and Bragg Street are current streets in this area.  However, Iberville Street does not currently run in this neighborhood.  Iberville Street presently runs parallel to, and between Canal Street and Bienville Street, ending close to City Park Avenue.  It is possible that, back in 1919, Iberville Street continued to run, in a north/south direction, all the way through to Lake Pontchartrain, thereby completing the square block specified in the building permit.
Residential development in the Lakeview District of New Orleans mostly dates to the post World War II era, so the residence planned by Peter Jung would have been one of the very first in this neighborhood, which was basically reclaimed swamp land.
Peter Jung, Sr., and his sons Peter Jr and Arthur, owned The Jung Hotel, located at the corner of Canal and La Salle Streets, in the Central Business District of New Orleans.  The extravagant structure was referred to as "The Million Dollar Hotel" by local papers and opened in 1907.  The Jung Hotel was designed by the famous architectural firm of Weiss, Dreyfous, and Seiferth, which also designed Charity Hospital and the Louisiana State Capitol building in Baton Rouge.  It remained a premier hotel and convention destination for much of the 20th century, hosting President Lyndon Johnson at an October, 1964 fundraiser and serving as the site of the very first Mardi Gras ball for the Krewe of Endymion in 1967.  Starting in the 1980s, the facility underwent a series of name changes as it was run - in succession - by a few different national hotel chains.  The building was flooded during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  In 2018, after a $ 140M renovation, it reopened as the "Jung Hotel and Residences".
Just to be clear, the building permit I am selling is not for The Jung Hotel but instead is for a residence a few miles away that was planned by Peter Jung, the owner of The Jung Hotel.
